I know the exact reason why I can’t get into Castle (the TV show) any more. Why I’m not into it now and why I just don’t watch it.
Okay, there are multiple reasons and I will list them:
- The fandom
- The Bechdel Test
- The LGBTQPIA representation
Let’s start with number 1, the fandom.
I was a part of the fandom a while back, quite a big part if I do say so myself. I loved the show and I loved talking to the fans. The reason I got into the show was because I saw someone who watched Bones blogging about it. This was before I got tumblr in 2010, only a few months earlier.
Now though, the fandom just pisses me off. It seems like it is much less professional and mature than I was led to believe. I was only 14 when I started watching Castle and I’m still young, only 17 but I’ve grown a lot since I was 14 and I’ve learnt more and realised more.
I knew that a lot of the Castle fandom were older than me and still are and I met some great people through that fandom, some of whom I still speak with to this day, but I don’t watch the show or participate in any fandom things. Because the fandom grew to annoy me. Pasting pictures of a “Castle fandom hijacked this post” image to EVERY post ever, talking incessantly about Castle and Beckett and not paying attention to the murder in each episode when they’re usually quite great, moaning about a sex scene that was cut because they felt they deserved it when in fact, there was no need to show it nor was there a need for anyone to see it. It isn’t what the show is about.
Number 2, the Bechdel test. This is when two women are in a scene together, talking and not about men.
With this show, there are 5 women on it who are in it a bit but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a scene between two of them that isn’t focussed on a relationship with a man. Lanie and Beckett? From season one they barely spoke about anything other than Castle, and their others scenes had other male characters in. Gates and Beckett, they talk about cases but there have been only a few scenes, which I could count on my hand that they have spoken alone and not about something involving a man. Alexis, Martha, Kate… They all talk about Castle and about their relationship and everything revolves around the men.
The show is called Castle, yes, it has three main men in, less than the females, yes. But, what it doesn’t have is a storyline that doesn’t, eventually, come back to a man. Doesn’t come back to involve a man in some way.
My third and final point of why I don’t like and cannot watch this show, is the LGBT+ representation. There is none.
List of straight characters (still on the show):
- Richard Castle
- Kate Beckett
- Lanie Parish
- Javier Esposito
- Victoria Gates
- Kevin Ryan
- Jenny Ryan
- Alexis Castle
- Martha Rogers
List of LGBT+ characters:
THERE ARE NONE! That isn’t indicative of a normal life. There is no representation in the show, in a main role. Which is ridiculous. We could go with the lesbian cop stereotype and have a character as such or the not so stereotypical gay cop (take Brooklyn Nine-Nine for example).
At this point, I’d take anything because this show is giving me nothing.
This isn’t for comments, this isn’t being tagged and I hope it isn’t seen because I just don’t feel like it. Comments, if any, might be ignored, who knows.
